What Are Atomic Habits Templates?

Atomic Habits templates are practical worksheets and tracking grids designed to remove ambiguity from behavior change. Rather than relying on willpower or vague aspirations (“I want to get in shape”), each template operationalizes a proven concept from the book—including the Habit Scorecard, Habit Stacking formulas, the Two-Minute Rule, and Habit Contracts.

Every template on this page is free, requires no account sign-up, and is available in interactive browser format, printable PDF layout, and digital Markdown for Notion and Obsidian.

Golden Rule of Habit Design

Standardize before you optimize. Do not try to use 5 templates at once. Pick one habit and apply the single relevant template until the routine is automated.

1. Habit Scorecard Worksheet (Awareness Audit)

Introduced in Chapter 4: The Man Who Didn’t Look Right, the Habit Scorecard is an awareness diagnostic. Before you can change your behavior, you must become conscious of what you do automatically.

List your daily routines in chronological order from morning to night. Rate each action:

  • + (Positive): Helps you become the person you wish to be.
  • - (Negative): Drags you away from your desired identity.
  • = (Neutral): A basic daily routine (e.g. tying shoes, taking shower).

Habit Scorecard Template

Map your daily habits, mark what helps or hurts your goals, and spot the patterns you may be running on autopilot.

How to Use This Template:

Start by recording what you actually do—not what you wish you did. Mark each habit based on whether it currently supports the person you want to become:

+ Positive: Supports your current goal− Negative: Works against your current goal= Neutral: Neutral or context-dependent

Step 2 — Audit Your Daily Habits

Record your routine from morning to night.

Action: Check social media in bed

Cue / Context: Phone beside bed

Why: Delays morning routine

Chapter 4 Tool: Pointing-and-Calling Prompt

"When I notice myself check social media in bed, I will say out loud: 'I am check social media in bed because Phone beside bed.'"

Saying the action out loud turns an automatic response into a conscious choice before you execute it.

2. Weekly & Monthly Habit Tracker (Never Miss Twice)

In Chapter 16: How to Stick With Good Habits Every Day, James Clear explains that visual measurement provides immediate satisfaction for delayed-reward habits.

Use the interactive grid below to log daily checkmarks. The golden rule is Never Miss Twice: missing one day is an accident, but missing two days in a row is the start of a new bad habit.

4 & 5. Habit Stacking & Implementation Intention Generator

In Chapter 5: The Best Way to Start a New Habit, Clear introduces two powerful cue-creation frameworks:

  • Habit Stacking: “After I [Current Routine], I will [New Habit].” (See our swipe file of 50+ Habit Stacking Examples).
  • Implementation Intention: “I will [Behavior] at [Time] in [Location].”

Your Ready-to-Use Statement

After I pour my morning coffee, I will write down my top 3 daily priorities.

6. The 2-Minute Gateway Habit Scaler

In Chapter 13: How to Stop Procrastinating, Clear introduces the Two-Minute Rule: when you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to do.

A new habit should not feel like a challenge. The actions that follow can be challenging, but the first two minutes should be effortless. Use our progressive habit shaping ladder below to scale your goal down to its 2-minute gateway:

Chapter 13 Gateway Tool

2-Minute Habit Shaping Ladder

Standardize before you optimize. Master the 2-minute entry point before increasing duration.

1
Phase 1 (2-Min Gateway) Start Here

Open a book and read 1 single page before bed.

2
Phase 2 (10 Minutes)

Read for 10 minutes after turning off bedside lamp.

3
Phase 3 (20 Minutes)

Read 1 full chapter every night.

4
Phase 4 (Advanced Habit)

Read 30 minutes in morning + 30 minutes in evening.

7. Never Miss Twice Recovery Protocol

Perfection is impossible. The difference between successful habit builders and those who relapse is how fast they recover from an inevitable disruption.

Step 1: Acknowledge the Miss Without Guilt

Missing one day does not ruin your progress. In Chapter 2, Clear explains that habits are votes for your identity. One missed day is just one lost vote—not a lost election.

Step 2: Execute the Emergency Minimum (Floor Habit)

On exhausting days, never drop to zero. If your standard workout is 45 minutes, do 5 pushups. If your writing goal is 1,000 words, write 1 sentence. Showing up on bad days preserves your neurological identity.

Step 3: Set an Uncompromising Day 2 Alarm

Immediately program your phone or environment cue for tomorrow. Missing two days in a row is the threshold where a missed habit begins cementing as a new pattern.

8. Bad Habit Inversion Worksheet

To break an unwanted routine, invert the Four Laws of Behavior Change (see our complete guide on How to Break Bad Habits):

Inversion 1 (Make It Invisible)Remove the Cue

Move phone to another room while working; remove junk food from pantry (Ch. 7).

Inversion 2 (Make It Unattractive)Reframe the Mindset

Highlight the negative costs and unmask the illusion of temporary relief (Ch. 10).

Inversion 3 (Make It Difficult)Increase Friction

Use app blockers, log out of accounts after each session, or unplug TV (Ch. 14).

Inversion 4 (Make It Unsatisfying)Add Immediate Costs

Create a signed Habit Contract with an accountability partner and financial forfeit (Ch. 17).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are Atomic Habits templates?

A: Atomic Habits templates are structured worksheets and tracking tools inspired by James Clear’s book. They turn behavioral principles—such as the Four Laws, Habit Scorecards, Habit Stacking, the Two-Minute Rule, and Habit Contracts—into concrete daily systems.

Q: Which Atomic Habits template should I use first?

A: Start with the Habit Scorecard. Before you can build new routines or break bad habits, you must audit your current automatic behaviors. Once your baseline is clear, choose one new habit and use the Habit Stacking or Implementation Intention template.

Q: What is the difference between a Habit Scorecard and a Habit Tracker?

A: A Habit Scorecard is a diagnostic self-awareness audit asking "What am I currently doing on autopilot?" A Habit Tracker is an ongoing consistency log asking "Did I complete my target habit today?"

Q: What is a Habit Contract template?

A: A Habit Contract is a formal agreement specifying your commitment, an accountability partner, and an immediate penalty (such as a financial fine or forfeit) if you fail to follow through.

Q: Can I use these Atomic Habits templates in Notion or Obsidian?

A: Yes. We provide free copyable Markdown templates that paste directly into Notion, Obsidian, Bear, Apple Notes, or Google Docs.
